Sapphire Yachting run friendly and informative Courses which are designed to enhance sailing proficiency and lead on to a range of RYA Practical Courses.

The syllabus is completed over five consecutive days or three weekends and arranged in various locations throughout Dorset , Hampshire and the Isle of Wight . Additionally, during the summer months Courses are also run on the Island of Skiathos in Greece . (Why not combine an RYA Theory Course with a yacht charter in Greece ?).

Day Skipper Shorebased

Course details:

Duration: 5 days OR 3 Weekends (40 hours)

Previous experience req: None – but some practical experience is desirable.

Content: Seamanship, basic navigation and pilotage, safety procedures, collision regulations and the new RYA electronic chart plotter.

The RYA Day Skipper Theory Course introduces the novice skipper to the wide range of subjects needed to take a small cuising yacht to sea. These include the parts and equipment of a yacht, emergency and safety equipment and procedures (such as distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, life jackets and liferafts). Students are taught the basics of coastal navigation and pilotage covering chartwork, position fixing, plotting a course to steer, weather forecasting a knowledge of tides and the International Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea. During the Course students sit two assessments, one on navigation and the other a general paper covering seamanship, meteorology and the collision regulations. At the end of the Course successful students will be awarded the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate and will have sufficient knowledge to undertake the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course. The Course will include course materials and morning and afternoon tea.


Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shorebased

Duration: 5/6 days OR 3 Weekends (40 hours)

Previous experience req: Knowledge of Navigation to Day Skipper level and practical sailing or motorboat experience.

Content: Coastal navigation, pilotage, meteorology, collision regulations and the new RYA electronic chart plotter.

The RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory course is an advanced course for those wishing to skipper a yacht on longer coastal passages or students working towards taking the Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore Exams. It is an intensive course covering advanced navigation techniques including – position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge and use of almanacs, admiralty publications and electronic position fixing equipment. The meteorology tuition includes the taking and interpretation of forecasts, plotting of weather systems and weather prediction using barometers and by observation. Students are shown how to use this information when planning and executing passage plans. The International Regulations for prevention of collision at sea are dealt with in detail. During the course students sit three assessments – one each on navigation, meteorology and collision regulations. At the successful completion of the course and assessments, students will be awarded the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shorebased Certificate. The Course includes all course materials and morning and afternoon tea.
